Can your running shoes do this? Part 2

Can your running shoes do this? Mine can!

Having fun learning how to balance. Taking full advantage of my environment. The horse trail rails are perfect for balancing. The FiveFingers help me feel a little better about falling off into rocks and cactus.

Hi Ted,

Nice balancing act! I laughed when that guy jogged by...wonder what he was thinking about you...lol.

Hey, when I was watching you balance on that rail a thought occurred to me. I saw that your head was in a forward posture, probably because you were looking down. I wondered what the effect of keeping your head in an upright posture, with your eyes looking forward (your body "knows" where the beam is), would be. If you are upright, your feet will be right under your head, and your spine and heels will be able to support you with less effort on your part. If the forefeet don't have to "worry" about supporting a lot of body weight, it might free them up to concentrate on gripping and balancing.

By the way, these are just thoughts off the top of my head. I'm not to the point where I can balance as good as you, but I thought I'd throw that idea out there to see what you think.

But then again, if the point of balancing is for coordination, muscle development, and fitness, then I guess putting weight on your forefeet is the way to go. Hmmm...interesting scenario.

Howdy Justin

I am totally looking forward to exploring the whole balance thing more.

It stems from my interest in the Methode Naturelle movement that I was recently introducted to.

I am sure that there is a lot for me to learn about effective posture while balancing. No doubt about it.

These videos represent my progress as it happens. I have tried balancing on these rails before. I can do it barefoot, but a sweaty foot on a metal pole is not great, and the fall, although not high, is onto some very unfriendly terrain.

It definitely is helping me work some core muscles while still having fun. You will never see me in a gym. I am a human, not a machine. I need sun and fresh air and nature if I am going to move.

Agreed! Gyms are like dungeons. Fluorescent lights are like brain-erasers...lol.

I've been thinking about starting to climb trees as part of my fitness regimen. You know what they say, you always go back to your roots...even if they are from three million years ago!

Slacklining also looks interesting, but at this point in my fitness career, I'm afraid I'll hurt myself trying it. But one day, oh yes, one day.

If you start slow and build gradualy you will not be injured.

My name is Fernando, and I´m on the Yahoo Groups of rRunning Barefoot, I talk little but read a lot :)

I practice Le Parkour, and have good interest in Methode Naturelle, I had the chance to meet Erwan and talked to people who trained with him.

About Balance, Ted have you ever tried to stay with your arms close to your body, trying not to bounce so much? I know they helps the way they are, but try with them near your body, like you were walking on the ground. And the thing of the head in upright posture, is good to train like this, grant you with proprioception, train your body do don´t rely so much in your eyes, consequently improving other capabilities, like feeling, hearing, etc.

Good runs and balance trainings,

Fernando Carraro.
